Overcoming Bloggers Block

bloggers block how to beat overcome
I'm going to be totally honest with you guys, I have been feeling like I've been stuck in a bit of a blogging rut. It happens to the best of us, one day you sit down in front of your computer and the words just come flowing out naturally, then other days it is more of a struggle to keep yourself motivated. Don't worry if you've found yourself with bloggers block, it's natural, and it most definitely doesn't mean your blog isn't going anywhere. Here are a few things I recommend that helped me get back on track.

Take a break. I took a week off blogging as every time I tried to write something it felt horrible and forced which clearly reflected in my writing. That is not the type of content you guys want to be reading, quality over quantity always. But after taking that blog-free week off, I feel ready to be firing out plenty of posts for you all.

Read other blogs. Obviously never copy anyone else's content, but I find other beauty bloggers so inspiring as beauty is something we all have in common and finding a new product to get excited about is the best feeling a blogger can get.

Stop comparing yourself to other bloggers. I do this more than I care to admit. I will always be proud of what a fellow beauty blogger achieves as we're all a part of the same internet family. Yes there are some bloggers who post daily, bloggers whose photos are always flawless, bloggers who are drop dead gorgeous, bloggers who use social media better... The list could go on, but it is okay that they're not me. I blog at my own pace, my photos will gradually get better.

Talk to your friends. One of my closest friends works at a Benefit counter, and wow do we talk about make up, A LOT. But just talking about it person to person, gets me all excited and passionate about make up all over again instead of just looking at my laptop screen.

Blogpost Ideas Posts. (link) Yes most of these lists include those cliché posts that everybody, ever, has done, but they really can help you get back on the right track, I mean who doesn't love a good favourites/what's in my bag post? We're all nosey at heart.

My Festival Essentials 2015

So it's festival season once again! It's one of the best and most expensive times of the year. Last year was the first ever time I had gone to a festival and I'll admit, I wasn't ready for it in the slightest! This year I've been more prepared and have bought all the items that I wish I had done last year.

To survive:
  • Tent (the most obvious one I know)
  • Sleeping Bags
  • Old Phone with Credit
  • Cereal Bars/Crisps/General Snack Foods
  • Water Bottle
Last year I winged festival season without my phone, but I really regretted it because once I got lost (that will happen) I had no way of contacting my friends to find out where they were, plus I didn't have my prescription glasses so I was blind as a bat. I actually bumped into some musicians (Fred V & Grafix if you know who they are) at a day festival this time last year, got talking to them and they helped me find my friends once I mentioned I was lost!

Accessories aka 'how to be stereotypical girl at festival'

  • Flower Headband
  • Gold Temporary Tattoos
  • Neon Rave Paint
  • Sunglasses
  • Bumbag
A bit of a warning about bumbags - if you can, try and find one like mine (photo above) where the clips are at the side and not one of those plastic ones at the back. There are some horrible people in this World and someone may try and unclip it when you're not looking and steal it. Last year I had a side bag and I was too drunk to notice some guy trying to take it, my Boyfriend had to pull me away before he succeeded...

Health & Hygiene

  • Sun Screen
  • Baby wipes
  • Makeup wipes
  • Dry Shampoo
  • Deodorant
  • Hand Sanitiser
  • Paracetamol
  • Disposable Tooth Brush
  • Tooth paste
  • Mouth wash
Seriously take advantage of the travel mini deals that both Superdrug and Boots ALWAYS have on!!! I think Superdrug is 3 for £3 and Boots is 3 for 2, either store you pick it will be the best thing you will ever do before going to a festival.

Hello April...

The last day of March is here... This month has absolutely flown by! But I say that every month. However this month in particular, I'm glad is over. I have had countless university assignments due in, 3 of which being this week alone! (hence the lack of posts this week - sorry about that) But  I can reward myself when the weekend comes, as I am going to be in Southend to celebrate my 20th birthday that is coming up on the 7th April!

I'm not going to lie, I'm super scared about turning 20. But a good kind of scared! I remember being in infant school saying to one of my friends at the time that 'we'll never be teenagers as that's sooooooooo far away'... But now I'm almost at adulthood. Which - off topic - confuses me, if 19 is teenager and 21 is adulthood then what is 20?? Some weird in the middle age like 17 was...

April is a really good month, I have asked everyone to get me those Cadburys Marvellous Popping Candy Easter Eggs as they're my favourite chocolate everrrrrrrrrr. And my birthday is a pretty big bonus too!

What's your favourite Easter Egg?

Confessions of a Beauty Blogger

As a beauty blogger, I have gained quite a few bad habits that I'm sure a few of you probably share with me. So I thought I should confess all of mine to see if you can relate to my sins! (I really hope you can...)

  • Going makeup shopping, I look at makeup thinking 'I can probably write about this'
  • Justifying all my makeup purchases by saying 'it's for the blog'
  • When I get new makeup I tend to not use it until I've photographed it
  • I often write posts and never share them due to shear laziness of not taking the photos
  • When I write posts I tend to have my (sometimes greasy) hair scraped back, whilst wearing my boyfriends joggers #glamorous
  • I hoard makeup, even if it's been completely used up. I had a clear out the other day to get rid of all the empties that I just hadn't parted with... Particularly nail varnishes.
  • When I see blog sales I console my makeup and tell it I'd never leave its side... total makeup hoarder here  #sorrynotsorry
  •  I often care more about what my face looks like more than my clothes and hair
  • When I was a kid I used to say 'I'll never wear makeup' now look at me...
  • I'm not as 'neat' as I may appear in my photographs, I clean my room (or an area of it) to hide the fact I'm a bit of a messy slob
  • After reading other peoples blogs I have gone and ordered products just because they said it was good (see bloggers are good advertisers!)
  •  I own SO many eyeshadow palettes... And I'm still AWFUL at blending!
  • ...nor can I apply false eye lashes!?
  • I've recorded and edited a YouTube video but have been too scared to upload it
  • Photoshop. I tend to Photoshop my pictures - if I notice a spec of dust it will bug me and I have to edit it out (but I think that's just me being weird)
  • I have spent too much of my student loan on makeup...It' so pretty though, so it's fine.
  • My family don't seem to understand what a 'blog' is 100%, when I told my Nan I'm expecting a PR sample through the post to review for my blog she asked if a blog was like 'the Facebook'... Facepalm. (I live with my Nan btw - fun fact for you all)
  • I cannot for the life of me paint my nails.. I now get them done in a nail bar every few weeks as I refuse to make such a mess of them anymore.
So there are all of my confessions, I would love to know if any of you have sinned with me!

Hello 2015...

What a year it's been. At risk of sounding like every other British person on the planet, it's crazy how fast this year has gone.. 2014 has been the best year of my life, it's going to be very hard for 2015 to beat it!

In 2014 I...
  • Saw out 2013 with Jake and our friends.
  • Turned 19 - meaning 2014 was my last year of being a teenager!!! Scary.
  • Started my blog under the name "Just As Wild"
  • Finished my college course with good grades.
  • Went to Colchester Zoo for mine and Jakes 1 year Anniversary <3
  • Went to Global Gathering 2014 - my first ever festival!
  • Went to my first ever Catwalk show: Cosmo #Fashfest
  • Met a few famous(ish) people - Louise Thompson, Fran Newman-Young, Mista Jam, Fred V & Grafix...
  • Bought a domain name for my blog now named "All That Shimmers"
  • Got an unconditional University offer
  • Dropped out of the offer last minute, due to a change of heart...
  • Got into my local University through clearing, studying Mass Communications (Media, English, Graphics and Journalism)
  • Started University.
  • Became the Student Representative for my year.
  • Held my first blog giveaway
  • Reached 1,000 followers on Bloglovin'
  • Got my first ever pay rise at work.
  • Volunteered with Text Santa in London.
  • Organised the University Christmas Social (lots of red wine stains, whoops)
  • Woke up at Jakes Christmas morning for the first time!
  • Got my first SLR.
  • Seeing out 2014 with Jake in London!

Resolutions:
  • Pretty cliche but lose weight. Not even a lot, just the Christmas pudge!
  • Become more of a fashion person. Explore further than leggings, jeans and a jumper... though they're still pretty great.
  • Do OOTD posts.
  • Improve blog photography and start YouTube, maybe?!
  • Use Instagram and Twitter more.
  • Let my hair grow... Less bleaching - if at all!!!
  • Finish my first year at Uni with at least a pass.... haha
  • Get a Pug (pls)
  • Drink less Coca Cola (the bane of my life)

Here's hoping 2015 is an even better year than 2014!

What I Got For Christmas

teddy, christmas, bokeh, cute, 2014, what i got for christmas
Hey guys, I hope you all had a good Christmas! Christmas tends to feel different every year as you get older. Now I'm nearing 20 I genuinely get excited about buying other people presents (particularly my 6 year old sister - who I could have bought every single bit of Frozen merchandise in the world!!) but I thought I would share with you what I got for Christmas!

Nikon D3200 & Accessories
I'm mentioning the biggest present I got first as I mentioned it in my Christmas Wishlist. Thanks to my lovely boyfriend I now finally have an SLR after years of pining for one! It also means better photos for future posts, yay!! (bear with me whilst I get used to my lighting equipment!)

Remington Hair Straighteners
I asked for hair straighteners for Christmas as my other pair got stood on, so I have been using my old pair for a month or two but it seemed pretty pointless as my hair was still bush-like after. There's nothing better than using a brand new pair of hair straighteners!

Laptop Cover
Another thing about me is my laptop travels with me pretty much everywhere, home, uni, my mums and my boyfriends. So I needed a protective case as I've been throwing my laptop in my bag where I also keep all my other bits like food and make up... And it's fluffy.

Heart Necklace
My favourite bit of jewelry has got to be necklaces! Certain metals on watches and bracelets can give me rashes around my wrists but I haven't had a necklace that's irritated my skin (yet) plus I love heart shaped pendents so so much! I actually have another necklace from last Christmas which also has a heart shaped pendent.

pug socks primark pugs cute christmas xmas
Pug Socks
If you know me, you know I have an undying love for pugs. I have lots of novelty pug stuff that I have collected over the years, particularly socks. Basically all of my socks have various pug patterns... If I see them I buy them no matter what!

teddy slippers footlets primark cute cheap
Cute Bear Slippers
I'm not much of a slipper person, they either slide off my feet or are too big (I have these giant Minnie Mouse ones which are really cute but are HUGE!) so these are pretty much perfect for me as they're super soft and they fit nice and snug!

lindor lindt christmas chocolate yum
Chocolate
I love getting chocolate for presents, gives me an excuse to over indulge myself over Christmas! Especially Lindt...

I also got fatter... What did you guys get for Christmas? Let me know in the comments!

The Christmas Tag

I never normally do tags but when I got tagged in this one by Olivia I couldn't resist! I'm feeling really christmassy this year already and I want to share that with all of you!

1. What is your favourite Christmas Movie(s)?
I actually get more excited for adverts than movies, I love both the Sainsbury's and John Lewis adverts soo much this year! But picking a movie I would say Gremlins. This movie reminds me sooo much of being a child. It's one of those movies that if it's on over Christmas it has got to be watched. I also love Gizmo, I still want one of my own.. Although my ferret is called Gizmo, haha!

2. Do you open your present on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?
Christmas morning for definite! I feel that opening presents beforehand would ruin the whole point of getting the presents, I like being sat with everyone and watching them open their presents as well, Christmas morning is the best morning of the entire year.

3. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?
One year as a child my Mum had worked a night shift on Christmas Eve and had got her boyfriend at the time (now her husband and my sisters dad) to baby sit me, I woke up in the middle of the night, gone down stairs and opened all my presents she had bought me without her there to watch me! She got home to finding me playing countless games of Guess Who with her boyfriend, haha!

4. Favourite festive food?
This might sound weird but on Christmas mornings my family have always had a fry up after opening all our presents, that was the best! Definitely going to miss that this year!

5. Favourite Christmas gift?
I can't think of a favourite present but I remember one that I was probably most excited about, it was one of those Sony Walkman phones that slid up? It was grey and had a pink flowery pattern on the back... #swag

6. Favourite Christmas scent?
CINNAMON. I love cinnamon so much.

7. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?
Buying loads of last minute stuff in a rush as everyone's just been paid! I have so many memories of being a child of rushing round town with my family buying countless last minute things... Maybe that has taught me well, as I begun buying presents in October this year!!

8. What tops your tree?
This changes over the years, we're not one of those families who have had the same star or fairy over the years and has been carried down through generations - which sounds really cute! We have had a star over the past few years though.

9. As a kid what was the one (crazy, wild, extravagant) gift you always asked for but never recieved?
I don't think I've ever asked for anything TOO crazy, I used to point to every childrens advert like "I WANT THAT" (in the least selfish way I can make that sound!) but one present I've always asked for and never got for the past few years is a Pug. If you know me even a little bit you know I have wanted a pug for years, I have lots of pug teddies, socks, notebooks, etc to fill the pug shaped hole in my life...

10. Whats the best part about Christmas for you?
I think the answer to this question changes with age, as a kid I was excited for all my new super cool presents! Now I'm excited about what I'm giving to other people, especially having a 6 year old sister - I have to hold back buying so many things for her! But I can't wait to see her face for when she sees what I have gotten for her!

I tag:
And any one else who reads this! Don't forget to link me as I would love to read them!

Bedroom Makeover

Hey guys! I just want to start off this post with saying that I'm sorry that I haven't been posting much the past week or so, I've actually been redecorating my room! Meaning I've been finding it difficult to gain the opportunity to take photos for my posts (boo!) but I'm back now so I thought I would show off what my room now looks like!

I live with my Nan and she's lived in this house for about 40 years and the room I'm in had this horrible bumpy paper, but apparently the wallpaper was there when my Nan had moved in the house, so me and my boyfriend spent our Friday night stripping the paper off the walls (I know how to live it up on Fridays!) and it took us forever, but after a lot of scraping and a few injuries later we had done!

Then I left my Nan to do the rest over the next few days as me and my boyfriend had done the hardest part and I came back to my room looking like this! Really happy with how it has turned out!

BEWARE OF DODGY EBAY SELLERS!!!

Ebay can be great, you can get some amazing bargins and save a lot of money but very rarely you do unfortunately get the horror story product on there. This is one of those stories, I've had a very bad experience with Ebay this week... Can you guess what product this is meant to be?

I bought myself the Naked 2 palette off Ebay for about £8 cheaper due to it apparently "not including primer" so when I saw the listing I thought result! As I already have an Urban Decay primer so  I would be saving myself a bit of money and getting the palette I've been lusting over for so long!

I got home from work yesterday all excited knowing it had been delivered and I opened it to be covered with black dust (which went everywhere!) the palette had broken in the post due to the awful way they'd posted it, it was just simply wrapped in an A4 bit of paper! No wonder the eye shadow broke. I was very upset.

I messaged the seller letting them know it had broken in the post to see if I could get my money back then I proceeded to clean up the palette... which is when I then noticed that it is of course a fake as well. Brilliant. I was absolutely pissed off.

The Urban Decay on the back should be upside down...

I then went on to leave bad feedback (which is obvs what you do when you're pissed off with an Ebay seller) I thought this may limit any chances I have of getting my money back but I couldn't exactly care at that moment in time.

However this horror story turned good when I received this email this morning.. Even though this ended well I have really learnt my lesson to be cautious with Ebay, especially with things that can easily be faked.

Just please don't make the same mistake I did. I've bought the real Naked 2 off Feel Unique now like I should have the first time around now, I would just hate if this happened to anyone else as well and it possibly not ending the same way for them as it did for me!

Happiness is beautiful!

Now I'm sure you're all familiar with all the inspirational "love your body" stuff that floats around the internet, I do agree with most of what they say - as everyone should love their body and we are all beautiful in our own way. But what really annoys me about them is a lot of the time its normally a larger girl slagging off skinny girls or vice versa. What's wrong with being skinny? What's wrong with being fat? You can say one or the other is unattractive, but that's not true, people still love other people of all sizes - it's a preference thing as beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

So why do people strive for a tiny body size so badly if it makes them unhappy? Love the body you have, it's your body, nobody elses! I personally think people should be striving more for their happiness than their looks - because if getting your desired body isn't making you happy, then what is the point? You could be the most beautiful looking person in the world yet still be the unhappiest, so again - what is the point? As long as you're happy, who cares about if you can fit into a size 10 pair of jeans or a size 12? I may sound hypocritical as I care about my hair, make up and clothes BUT I do those things because they make me happy, not so people will like me or because I feel I need too.

I'll never forget a day in school (like 4 years ago now) that me and Abi (Meet me in Mayfair) got called "Supersize vs Superskinny" by this girl that we really didn't get on with. Like come on, why would you say that to someone? That is the most horrible comment you could ever say to two people, what on Earth made her think it was a good idea to say that? It just makes her look like the most horrible human being. If we were really insecure about our weight, that could have set either of us off and possibly result in an eating disorder and she would have been entirely to blame. If you really feel the need to comment on someone else's weight in a malicious way you clearly have issues with your own that you need to sort out as you're clearly unhappy. I really believe in the saying "treat others how you wish to be treated" especially now I'm older and it is so, so true - if you're a dick to someone expect them to be a dick back, but if you're kind to someone they're going to repay your kindness with some of their own (unless they're a dick).

I find that really sad that people feel the need to slate other people for their size, that is a part of that person there is no right and wrong in how people look - we all look different, you could weigh the exact same as someone but still look completely different as we are all different. This is why people should be striving for happiness because let's be honest, with relationships people come around at the beginning for your looks, not always in a shallow way but you're going to be attracted to the person for their looks when you start pursuing your interest, then you go on to find out about who they really are - and at the end of the day what makes them stay is your personality, as in 50 years you both are not going to be attractive as you are right now but you would still be together regardless of what they look like as you love your significant other not because what they look like, but because of who they are.

I don't let my size control my life. Too many people do though. But unless it effects your health (as you can be too skinny or too fat) who cares? You shouldn't let your weight define your happiness. I personally don't care about what everyone thinks of me - I'd be lying if I said anyone because I do. I care what my boyfriend, friends and family think, but if they're worth having around they would love me for who I am, not if I could fit into a size 6 or a size 16.

My main goal in life is to achieve happiness if that means I'm fat, thin, poor or rich. I will do all I can to say I lived a happy life as I feel that is something to be proud of and I would like to be remembered as a happy person.

(sorry about the rant)

What's in my bag: University Edition

So this week I finally begun University! Eee exciting stuff. I have had the same fears as everyone else. Will I make friends? Where the eff am I going? Why is Google maps so crap when you're in the middle of a crisis? So to mark the occasion I thought I would do a "what's in my bag?" tag but a University edition!

I'm starting off with notebooks! I've bought myself three (I'm a bit of a stationary nut, don't judge me) I've taken an A4 Nu: Era Notebook to be practical so I can take notes in lectures, a novelty "Pugs not Drugs" notebook - just because I love pugs and a small butterfly notebook as I like to make a lot of "to do lists" with what I've got to complete on assignments and ofc shopping lists!

(nu:era and butterfly notebooks are from Asda and the pug one's from Tesco!)
To carry my pens I have packed a bright colourful pencil case! Who doesn't like a neon coloured pencil case? At least it's very distinguished, meaning I most probably won't lose it. I also have my favourite leopard print pen to make notes with (it came in a pack of 3 along with a zebra and a tiger pen). It is so snazzy! I'm a massive fan of leopard print!

(Both are from Asda #supermarketsavvy)
I also took both my iPod and the latest issue of Elle for entertainment whilst travelling to and from University, I've actually decided to live at home and will be commuting to the local Uni via both train and taxi! We actually have a taxi service that does anywhere within the area for £3.50 so for first thing in the morning that is absolutely perfect. I love reading magazines on long train journeys, I should probably buy the travel size as it takes up soooo much room in my bag, but I prefer the full sized copies... I can't be the only one?

(the leopard print earphones are from Accessorize)
At the bottom of my bag you will also find Baby Lips lip balm, Keep Calm lip balm, Vera Wang Pink Princess perfume, a small hair brush and a pocket mirror floating about so I can remaining feeling fabulous all day long *sassy emoji*

(skull pocket mirror is from New Look)
Then last but not least there's the essentials like my phone, keys and purse!

(purse is from H&M, phone case is off Amazon)
So what is in your College/University bag? Is your bag similar to mine? Let me know down in the comments!

The Beginning of All That Shimmers! BLOG RELAUNCH

So, some of you may have noticed that my blog has been down for the past couple of days, showing up as "private" or just not loading at all... This is due to it having been under construction! I bought a new pretty domain name, but I'd been having problems linking my domain name with my blog (boo) so I had to transfer the domain name to another host-y website in the end, then now there's problems with the wrong URL on bloglovin... All that matters is that it's finally back up and running!

As well as the new name, my blog's design is looking a whole lot different too - everything is new! Eee! I'd been wanting to buy a domain name for so long, but I didn't want to get tied down with a name that I wasn't sure on, so I decided that I'd buy one when I felt that I'd found the perfect name, the one where you just know... you know? Well, that day has finally come, welcome to www.allthatshimmers.co.uk!

One of my favourite quotes is "All that glitters is not gold" so inspired by the quote I had originally wanted "All That Glitters" but ofc other people like the quote as well and had the same idea, so I couldn't use that - then it struck me that I absolutely looove shimmer products! My favourite moisturiser, eye shadow, fake tan AND foundation all contain shimmer (shine bright like a diamond) so put the two together and that's how All That Shimmers was born!

Old blog layout!
New blog layout!
I'm v.excited about the new look and name of my blog, and I am so much more confident about the posts I have lined up over the next few weeks - so make sure to keep an eye out for them! I would love to hear what you think of the whole blog relaunch!

Annoying things about working in retail (in gifs!)

Like many other people my first job was in a retail environment (yay...) luckily, I now have my current job working in an office so I'm free from these woes! Here are some of the annoying things I came across in my own personal experience.

The "do you work here" question - no I'm just wearing the uniform for the fun of it.

Coupons. Need I say anymore? They were always a pain to put through the till.

The breaks you get are no where near long enough.

When a customer tries to return something without a receipt... especially when it's clearly been used.

When a customer's telling you their life story when there is a massive queue behind them

All you can think about is going home after your shift...

Although you earn minimum wage, so you can't go too crazy...

If you work in a well known retail company the employee discount is normally only 10%

When you have to get a product from the stock room for a customer, the dark, scary stock room..

When a customer claims a product is a different price to what's showing on the till. It could be a 10p difference but they still want the money off, making the process of serving them even longer as you have to leave your till to double check.

When a customer comes and messes up a shelf that took you ages to tidy

When someone's card gets declined...

When you get called to come in on your day off

Struggling to be polite to the rudest of customers

Customers who form their own queue, then get pissed off when you continue serving the actual queue

4 hours feels like 4 days

When you put your hand out for money and they place it on the counter anyway

Last but not least - people who are still wondering about even though the store is clearly closing! And you sort of stand there watching them hoping they eventually get the hint.

Are any of your experiences in retail similar? Let me know!
